Thermowood – the ideal wood for decking and cladding
Thermowood is one of the most innovative wood materials available on the market. Thanks to advanced thermal treatment, this wood gains exceptional properties such as enhanced resistance to weather conditions, increased durability, and excellent dimensional stability. It is particularly recommended for outdoor applications such as decking and façade cladding. At BHB, we use Thermowood for producing high-quality decking and façades because we know that this way we offer our clients solutions that combine aesthetics with functionality.
What is Thermowood?
Thermowood, also known as thermally modified wood, is created through a process that involves heating wood to high temperatures. This process takes place in an oxygen-free environment, where the wood is heated up to 240°C without air exposure. As a result, the wood acquires remarkable properties, becoming more durable, resistant to moisture and pests, as well as pleasant to the touch with a uniform and aesthetically appealing appearance.
Thermowood is an eco-friendly material – no chemicals are used during the treatment process, making it 100% natural and environmentally safe. Additionally, thermally treated wood boasts improved thermal insulation, making it an excellent choice for outdoor structures like decking or home façades.
Why choose Thermowood?
Production process
Thermal wood treatment is a technologically advanced process that consists of several key stages. This process not only enhances the durability of Thermowood but also improves its appearance and functionality. Here’s how the thermal treatment of wood works:
Drying:
The wood is first dried at high temperatures to remove all moisture. During this stage, the wood’s temperature can rise to 130°C, reducing its moisture content to nearly zero.
Thermal treatment:
The wood is then exposed to temperatures ranging from 180°C to 240°C in a controlled atmosphere. This process alters the chemical structure of the wood, making it more resistant to moisture, mold, and pests.
Cooling and stabilization:
After the treatment is completed, the wood is slowly cooled to around 80-90°C to achieve dimensional stability. As a result, the wood retains its properties even in challenging weather conditions.
Innovations in Thermowood technology
Continuous advancements in technology have made the thermal treatment process even more precise, resulting in wood with superior characteristics. New methods allow for greater control over the wood’s structure, enhancing its strength without significant loss of other mechanical properties.
Comparing Thermowood to other materials
Compared to traditional wood, Thermowood offers much greater resistance to weather conditions such as rain, snow, or UV radiation. Furthermore, unlike composite materials, Thermowood is 100% natural, making it an environmentally friendly choice. In comparison to other types of wood, Thermowood requires less maintenance, and its durability and stability make it more efficient over time.
At BHB, we have long focused on using the best construction materials, and Thermowood is one of the key resources in our range. We select only the best solutions to ensure that our customers receive top-quality products that meet their expectations.
Key benefits of Thermowood
Thermowood offers a wide range of advantages, making it the ideal material for many outdoor applications. Here are some of its most significant benefits:
1.Weather resistance
Thermowood is resistant to moisture, fluctuating temperatures, and UV radiation. This is particularly important for outdoor structures like decks or cladding, which are exposed to constant environmental factors.
2.Durability and dimensional stability
Thanks to the thermal treatment process, Thermowood becomes more durable, meaning it doesn’t swell, shrink, or warp. It is also more dimensionally stable, making it perfect for constructions exposed to changing conditions.
3.Pest resistance
Thermowood is naturally resistant to fungi, mold, and insects. As a result, there’s no need for chemical treatments, making it a safe and environmentally friendly material.
4.Thermal insulation
Thermowood has better insulation properties than traditional wood, helping structures made from it retain heat more effectively. This is particularly important for outdoor applications where thermal insulation plays a crucial role.
5.Ecology
Thermowood is a fully natural and eco-friendly material. Its production process does not require chemicals, and the raw wood comes from renewable sources.
Applications of Thermowood
Thermowood is widely used in various outdoor projects. The most common applications include decking, exterior cladding, and garden structures. Its resistance to moisture, UV radiation, and changing temperatures makes products made from Thermowood durable and low-maintenance. Additionally, its natural appearance makes it an excellent choice for garden design.
