Tyrolean Lock - tradition and innovation

At Bertsch Holzbau, we are proud to present a unique joining systems for timber – the Tyrolean Lock. We are the only company on the market to offer this method, which combines a traditional, rustic style with a modern approach to log house and timber construction. Tyrolean locking provides a unique design by eliminating visible log ends, giving structures an elegant and minimalist look.

What is Tyrolean Lock?

Tyrolean Lock is a special method of joining logs that differs from the classic ‘chalet’ joint. In the traditional chalet system, the ends of the logs, the so-called extensions, stick out beyond the edges of the walls. With a Tyrolean Lock, these elements are completely eliminated, making the structure more compact and modern without losing its traditional charm.

Tyrolean lock chalets present simpler lines, ideal for those who appreciate aesthetics combined with functionality. This method is only used on log cabins with a profile thickness of more than 45 mm, which ensures the robustness of the structure.

Differences between Tyrolean and Chalet jointing

The classic chalet joint is characterised by protruding log ends, the length of which depends on the thickness of the timber – from 9 cm to as much as 20 cm for thicker profiles. In the Tyrolean Lock, these elements are absent, giving the structure a modern and balanced look.

While the chalet connection is characteristic of traditional timber structures, the Tyrolean Lock stands out with an aesthetic that brings a breath of modernity to rustic cottages. With this solution, the chalets look neater and their massing is more compact.

Advantages of the Tyrolean Lock

Tyrolean Lock has several important advantages:

1. Elegant design – The lack of protruding log ends gives the structures a minimalist look while retaining a rustic feel.

2. Uniqueness

we are the only ones on the market to offer this system, which sets our products apart from the competition and therefore our customers’ cottages.

3. Rustic charm – Tyrolean Lock refers to the tradition of timber construction, especially in the Alpine regions, providing the cottages with a unique style.
